In order to offer a competitive salary with the government schools, Sierra Leone requests teachers’ salaries. Their goal of providing continuous educational excellence recognized by the national Department of Education has proven difficult since almost all the schools lack permanent buildings and classrooms. The Lutheran Primary School in Koidu was one of four schools nationwide to receive this honor in 2009. Sixty-one students passed the National Primary School examination, defining a dramatic increase from the 20 students to receive this honor in 2008.
